BLOGGER TEAM - EMILY - DISCIPLESHIP

Millions of young people all over the world have heard the word ‘disciple’ used within the Church several times, yet many of us still fail to understand the necessary requirements and true meaning of the word itself.  However, when it comes to discipleship, it’s very important to remember this.  Just because every disciple is a believer, this does NOT mean that every believer is a disciple.

So what does it mean to be a disciple and a follower of Jesus Christ?  A disciple is often described as a ‘learner’ or a ‘pupil,’ making discipleship the relationship between the teacher and the pupil.  But with that being said, it’s not just about having the desire to learn or be taught – there are necessary requirements outlined by Jesus himself.

In Luke 14:25-33, we see Jesus lay out His exact requirements of discipleship. Within these Scriptures, Jesus makes it very clear about the steps needed.  One important thing to take note of here is the fact that the phrase ‘you cannot be my disciple’ is actually repeated several times.  This symbolises the importance of Jesus’ requirements and the significance of His words.  Let’s break it down:

Luke 14:26-27 (NLT) states: “If you want to be my disciple, you must, by comparison, hate everyone else—your father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters—yes, even your own life. Otherwise, you cannot be my disciple.  And if you do not carry your own cross and follow me, you cannot be my disciple.”

Luke 14:33 (NLT) then goes on to say: “So you cannot become my disciple without giving up everything you own.”

The three main things to take note of here are:

1. To seek God first in all things!
2. To take up your cross and follow Jesus!
3. To surrender all that you own unto Jesus and dedicate your life to Him!

As stated in Matthew 6:33, “But seek ye first the Kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all of these things shall be added unto you.”  Many of us often cling on to God during difficult times, but God should be put first above everyone and anything!  And this is what is meant in Luke 14:26 as stated above – when it comes to the comparison of God, ALL things (including your family) should be second best.

To me, seeking God first is the number one priority, and the minute you start doing this properly, you will be on the road to success as Jesus’ disciple.  This then ties in with surrendering all that you own unto Jesus.  You must believe and declare Jesus Christ is your Lord and saviour, and then make a conscious decision to serve Him wholeheartedly!

Serving the Lord in your youth is a very hard battle, and there will be so many times when you might feel like giving up.  But remember that God is with you.  Today, decide to give yourself wholly to the things of God and be the best disciple that you can be!
